Ronnie will talk about his entrepreneurial journey which started in 1973 when he hopped on a train in Devlali to go to Mumbai for his BSc. By 1977 he was on his way to Oklahoma to do his BS and MS in Petroleum Engineering followed by an MBA. After 25 yrs of building a successful career in NYSE based companies and realizing that he had good instincts and insights in finding oil and gas he decided to retire from the public company arena and try his hand on the private side. In 2005 he founded his own oil company, RKI Exploration & Production. Over the next decade he struck oil, or should we say Gold, selling RKI in three tranches in 2015 for $3.5 Billion. Ronnie likes to say, “ONCE YOU COMMIT, THEN PROVIDENCE MOVES ALSO”. It does not just happen, and Ronnie will highlight his challenges, risks along the way and unique mix of skills which allowed him to shine and succeed. Ronnie and his wife Shahnaaz, who is also from Mumbai, have been married for 40 years, have two lovely daughters Roxanne and Natasha, and consider Oklahoma as their permanent home. Ronnie has received numerous institutional, professional and business awards, from lifetime achievement awards, living legend and Oklahoma Hall of Fame Awards. He recently received the 2023 Honorary Doctorate from University of Oklahoma. In appreciation of institutions, organizations, communities and people who supported and enabled him he has given back to make a difference in the lives of many. Ronnie created and funded the Ronnie K Irani Center for Energy Solutions in the College of Engineering at OU; RKI Center for Creation of Economic Wealth in Price College of Business; RKI Center for Data Analytics and AI at Oklahoma City University. Ronnie is very passionate about working closely with students to become successful entrepreneurs and leaders. The WZCC BC Vancouver Chapter had of our second meeting for 2023-2024 on 15 Oct0ber 2023 .

At the Arbab Rustam Guiv Dar-e-Mehr. The speaker was Rob Gawthrop of tune FINANCIAL; topic was STRATEGIES FOR INSURANCES AND ESTATE PLANNING. We thank Homi Italia our Treasurer for requesting this speaker. The very informative session was attend by 12 individuals with 1 person on Zoom. We thank ALL who attended and the speaker and also the volunteers who looked after the refreshments under the leadership of Board Member Arian Sasani. We acknowledge with gratitude Sorab Vesuna of Minuteman Press for the generous donation of the BANNER, and cash donation from 1 member. We also extend our deepest thanks to our dear Kayras Irani, President of the ZSBC for the use of the Dar-e-Mehr premises and facilities to WZCC BC at no cost. The speaker was Aurash Yazdgerdian, CPA Topic was Effective Tax Strategies  The very detailed informative session was attended by 9 individuals with 11 person on Zoom. We thank ALL who attended and the speaker and also the volunteers who looked after the refreshments under the leadership of Board Member Arian Sasani. WZCC Toronto Chapter January 2019

The formal launch of the World Zoroastrian Chamber of Commerce, Toronto started off auspiciously on 2nd January 2019, with two excellent presentations and around twenty members present in spite of the 0-degree temperatures. Afreed Mistry gave a brief into about the WZCC and then welcomed all the speakers and the invitees and then opened the floor for the presentations. The first presentation was by RBC Bank who had sent three of its representatives to conduct a PPT session. Geruza Baptista, and Karan Kapoor, both Business Account managers and Tom Magnowski, Commercial Account Manager. RBC talked about the 5 challenges that every new business faces and how RBC can help. They talked about understanding Canadian Business culture as an essential part of any business and their commitment to providing relevant information, resources and expert guidance. Having a Business Plan was an absolute necessity and that asking key questions would go a long way in designing a good marketing plan. They also mentioned how banks look at how you will manage your cash flow, your liquidity and how well you have worked on forecasting your business needs to determine your break-even numbers. They discussed the different packages for down payments depending on cash flow/financing deals/guarantees etc. They dwelt on the concept of working capital finance having fixed fees while if buying/leasing equipment it would have term fees. They gave a few tips on building up a good credit history which would come in handy in getting access to financing from them. Their different methods would be: 1) Business line of credit 2) Business credit cards 3) Term loans 4) Leasing 5) Overdraft protection. The second presentation was excellently done by Mahyar Hansotia, CPA, President and owner of Sobel & Co, a Professional Corp. He started by emphasizing that you need two “partners” from the very beginning, an accountant and a lawyer who will guide you with their experiences. He explained that there are four types of businesses and how each business is unique with different requirements and goals and gave an overview of each entity. Viz: A Sole Proprietorship, A Corporation, A Partnership and lastly a Joint Venture. He gave an overview of each type of business and then the advantages and disadvantages of each of them along with a few myths that most people believed in. He then also talked about HST and GST and how it was mandatory for all businesses to register if the threshold was met. He mentioned how different provinces have different rules for taxes, and how different goods are taxed. He explained further how additional different filings may be required. Eg: T4 if you have employees, T5 if you pay interest or dividends, or foreign reporting forms if you have assets in other countries, etc. He then ended by saying that having your own business is a lot of hard work, a lot of stress, requires a lot of administrative work to be done, but it can be very rewarding too. You learn new skill sets, financially you will do well, you will enjoy what you are doing as it is your own baby and that you will always no matter what have a boss…Your customer! Lastly, he said the key to it all is to have fun! After thanking all the speakers, we had an election for the new board of the WZCC Toronto Chapter and the elected individuals are: Cyrus Patel, President, Arashasp Shroff, Secretary, and Meherwan Wadia, treasurer Afreed then read out a letter by Edul Davar, WZCC Global president who heartily congratulated the formation of the new Toronto Chapter and wish all success to the new team. He also enthused all, to attend the WZCC-Global AGM scheduled in Orlando, Florida, from May 1st to 5th 2019. The meeting ended with a scrumptious dinner enjoyed by all. Dilnavaz

Spotlight on Vistasp Karbhari

Vistasp M. Karbhari is a Professor in the Departments of Civil Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, where he served as the 8th president from 2013 to 2020.  He is internationally known for his research on processing and mechanics of composites, durability of materials, infrastructure rehabilitation, and multi-threat mitigation, for which he has received awards and is a fellow of numerous professional organizations. As an administrator and higher ed leader he is known for his work and advocacy for access and attainment in higher education as well as for enhancing excellence and has been honored by numerous organizations for his contributions including as a Fellow of Complete College America.

“Operation Tekchem”

Dear Member, Many Members have fond memories of WZCC programs which were held on earlier occasions at Leslie Sawhny Training Centre, Deolali. Since there is an increasing demand from the Members to have such a program once again, WZCC India Region has decided to hold an event at the Centre. This event will be held at the same venue covering two days, Saturday 27 th and Sunday 28th April 2024. The overnight stay includes a visit to the award-winning Gargoti Museum, the only Museum in India that displays the mineral treasures of the earth (details attached). The program “Operation Tekchem” will be expounded by Maj. Gen. Cyrus Pithawalla, AC, VSM, a former General officer of the Indian Army. He was awarded India's highest peacetime decoration for gallantry, the Ashok Chakra, in 1981, and by virtue of this, he is one of the most decorated flag officers in the history of the Indian Armed Forces. His session will be a first-hand account of action of neutralizing nine hard core insurgents in Manipur. This is a tale of leadership, discipline & decision making. Itinerary Saturday, 27 th April, 2024 - 6.30 a.m. sharp -  Members will leave Sethna Agiary, Tardeo, (opp.Bhatia Hospital) (Members will need to assemble at the coach site 15 minutes prior to departure) - 6.50 a.m. sharp - At Dadar (opp. Dadar Parsi Gymkhana)   (Members will need to assemble at the coach site 15 minutes prior to departure) 10.45 a.m. – 12.15 p.m.  Visit to Gargoti Museium (on Nashik-Shirdi Highway) -  1.30 p.m. Reach Leslie Sawhny Training Centre, Deolali. -  2 p.m. to 3 p.m. -  Lunch -  3 p.m. onwards members get free time -  7.15 p.m.  onwards - Assemble in the Leslie Sawny Training Centre garden for networking and dinner. Sunday, 28 th March 2024 - 8.00 a.m. – Breakfast - 9.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. – Program “Operation Tekchem” (Coffee break 11.15 a.m. to 11.35 a.m.) - 1.15 p.m.to 2.15 p.m.  - Lunch - 3.00 p.m. – Departure for Mumbai.
